| Masumi Hayashi, Meditations: Heartland Curated by Susan R. Channing |
The Cleveland Salt Mines II, Cleveland, Ohio, 1987 |
|
| As a collaborator in the four-part regional exhibition Masumi Hayashi, Meditations SPACES presents Heartland, featuring nine large-scale panoamic photo-collages made between 1986 and 1992 (one never before exhibited) and a tenth from 2004. | ||
| Hayashi’s stark reconstructions of post-industrial Cleveland, created 20 years ago, remain as eloquent as ever. Their tiled structure, composed of many separate shots that record a complete 360-degree horizon, is itself a metaphor for memory and time. While Hayashi would go on to confront history more directly in internment camps and prisons, the austere solemnity of her style was born in Cleveland, and in it we rediscover her reverence for quiet and meditation. Masumi Hayashi, Meditations: Heartland is made possible in part through generous support from the Kulas Foundation. Additional funds are provided by Process Creative Studios. |
