Libby Black joins SPACES as the 20th SWAP artist to complete a six-week residency. Black earned her BFA in painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art (1994–99) and an MFA at California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco (1999–01). She was an artist-in-residence at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California (2005) and was awarded the Cultural Equity Grant by the San Francisco Arts Commission (2003), as well as The Goldie Award by the San Francisco Bay Guardian (2002).
Using paper, hot glue, and paint, she creates life-size versions of luxury goods produced by Rolex, Neiman Marcus, Kate Spade, and Louis Vuitton.
In the artist’s words:
My work deals with issues of class and expectations of perfection. With Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Mercedes Benz, and other purveyors of luxury as my insp
iration, I explore the outward appearance of the good life by extracting and recreating status symbols and high-end consumer goods. My drawings and paper sculptures are about surface, desire, and distraction. I am drawn to this subject matter because of my uneasiness and ambivalence about what these status symbols mean to me and how they function in society.
