You may be ready for the future, but are you ready for the future of abstract art? SPACES will bring you up to date and kick off the new millenium with a bang, as we present Painting Function: Making It Real, on view from January 7 through February 18th, 2000. This important exhibition, curated by New York critic and writer Saul Ostrow, will showcase cutting edge work by some of the most exciting contemporary artists working today. Don't miss the spectacular opening reception on Friday, January 7th from 5-9pm, as SPACES welcomes curator Saul Ostrow and lights up the Cleveland skyline with the first illumination of our new neon and steel roof sign! This must-see exhibition features work by 32 artists of varying ages, artistic mediums and stages in their careers, who all push the boundaries of abstract art in challenging new ways. Sculpture, installation art, photography and digital media are included with painting in this exciting exhibition. Established artists Mel Bochner (New York, NY) and Peter Halley (New York, NY) examine the theory behind abstract painting in their work, while younger contemporary artists such as David Craven (New York, NY) and Fabian Marcaccio (New York, NY) push the boundaries of painting itself, bursting off the canvas with sculptural elements and animating their brushstrokes to the point of personification. Northeast Ohio artists selected by Saul Ostrow for this exhibition include Paul O'Keeffe (Kent, OH) whose three-dimensional, vibrantly-hued work blurs the boundaries between sculpture and painting, and Bruce Checefsky (Cleveland, OH) who uses photographic processes to examine forms of abstraction not possible with paint. Gallery Hours for SPACES are Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 11-5:30pm. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 5500 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
