SPACES presents two installation exhibits by artists Jennifer Schmidt and Collette Copeland as a part of the SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year-round by a committee of younger artists. From January 7-28, Jennifer Schmidt(Baltimore, MD) makes the gray Cleveland winter bloom with lush springtime color in her installation, Inherently Pink. The artist creates a saccharine garden of flowers and abstract forms using fiberglass insulation as a sculptural medium, creating a lush, tactile environment from what might otherwise seem a hopelessly synthetic material. Collette Copeland (Fayetteville, NY) snas us back into reality with her installation entitles Abortion Stories. On view from February 1- 18, this work documents the stories of women who have made the difficult decision to abort their unborn fetuses. These stories are presented as text printed on the gallery floor, while photographic images of the women's faces appear on peices of white cloth, hung from a clothesline like airing "dirty laundry", both shameful and revitalizing. The artist will present a public gallery talk on the work and its controversial subject matter on Sunday, February 1st at 1pm. Gallery hours for SPACES are Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 11-5:30pm. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 5500 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West Side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. |
