Structurally Sound

Jan 5 - Feb 16, 2001

SPACES

Want to experience some space-altering art to kick off the New Year? Indulge your senses as you explore Structurally Sound: an exhibition of three major site-specific installations, on view at SPACES Gallery from January 5th to February 16, 2001. An opening reception will be held at SPACES on Friday, January 5th from 5-9pm. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Upon entering the gallery, you'll first encounter work by Kim Eggleston (Cleveland OH) who transforms both the front and rear areas of the gallery into a series of translucent corridors with ramps and steps. She offers visitors a new perspective of the windows and structure of the gallery itself. Meanwhile, Thomas Lail (Brooklyn, NY) uses the site's architecture in another way: his piece is based on floor plans of the gallery's office area. By installing huge new walls and slicing through them to reveal the supporting systems behind, Lail examines the nature of the "hidden work zone" within the public gallery, creating a dynamic new space. Beside him, Garth Freeman (Brooklyn, NY) incorporates everything from homemade chairs to headphones, sculptures made of cardboard and paintings on paper into his low-brow, interactive environment. Visitors are invited to walk over and through his plywood ramps and rooms, listening at audio stations that correspond with wall works, or sitting down to contemplate it all in one of the seats provided by the artist.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 6,000artists an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit-Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
