SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists dzine and Sydney Licht as a part of our SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of younger artists. dzine (Chicago, IL) turns his visit to Cleveland into a mini-residency project - collecting found objects from alleys, streets, and abandoned buildings as the basis for his ongoing wall work, Suckerpunch, on view from January 5 - 26. During the opening reception, the artist will interact with visitors to create and arrange works on paper based on the objects he has found. The resulting grid formation reflects dzine's experiences with the people and places he has come in contact with. Sydney Licht (Rochester, NY) also employs discarded materials in her work, using them to comment on cycles of consumption and waste in our culture. In her installation, Strain, the artist fills the Lab with suspended floor-to-ceiling strands of styrofoam packing "peanuts" stuffed with cherry pits, creating an undulating room of recycled materials. This work will be on view from January 30 to February 16. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 6,000artists an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit-Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. |
