Surface Tensions

Nov 17 - Dec 29, 2000

SPACES

Check your stress at the door and enjoy a unique mix of style and substance as SPACES presents Surface Tensions, on view at SPACES from November 17 – December 29, 2000. The exhibition showcases the work of nine artists from across the country who explore the possibilities of texture, pattern and color through painting, sculpture and projected video. An opening reception will be held at SPACES on Friday, November 17th, from 5-9pm. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Jeanne Patterson (Los Angeles, CA) obscures commercially-printed images on fabric with translucent layers of paint and resin, creating multi-layered, organically-shaped wall works; while Susan Danko (Cleveland, OH) uses vibrant hues and sharp edges to reinterpret nature in today’s high-tech world. “Cone Field,” a projected video installation by Megan Roberts and Raymond Ghirardo, (Ithaca, NY) incorporates layers of sound and multiple video projections with natural and synthetic textures on geometric forms. Kate Budd (Akron, OH) addresses sexuality and dysfunctional relationships in a site-specific installation of wax, latex and mixed media, and Steve Stelling (Columbus, OH) uses intersecting stripes and geometric volumes in paintings that describe familiar objects in unexpected ways. This exhibition also features work by Selena Beaudry (Philadelphia, PA), Marietta Hoferer (New York, NY), and Shona Macdonald (Chicago, IL.).

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 6,000 artists an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit-Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
