Background Information

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run organization with a 5,500 sq. ft. gallery on the western edge of downtown Cleveland.

SPACES creates opportunities for developing and experimenting artists to present challenging new work to the public, and promotes their work to audiences in and outside of Ohio. It shows significant work which would not otherwise be seen in Northeast Ohio. By doing so, SPACES invites dialogue and provides a forum for the vital exchange of artistic ideas in a positive environment for artists and those interested in their work. It emphasizes small group exhibitions, allowing artists to present their work as they want it to be seen.

SPACES is managed by a staff of five and a board of trustees, one-half of whom are working artists. SPACES is funded by the Cleveland Foundation, the George Gund Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, as well as by membership dues, individual donations and an annual benefit event.

Exhibition Opportunities

SPACES selects artists for exhibitions on the basis of quality and need. Applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed annually in the spring by the Board Programming Committee, composed largely of working artists. From the review, a schedule for the next season of six exhibitions, each six-weeks long, from September through July, is determined. Completion of the entire process can take from six to nine months, with artists being notified as soon as possible.

SPACES furnishes the setting, publicity, an opening reception, and the printing and mailing of announcements for each exhibition. We pay honoraria to all exhibiting artists and curators. We insure artwork while on exhibition, and handle sales of artwork during an exhibition, taking a 20% commission.

Except for our SPACE Lab program, SPACES does not exhibit work by artists who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting program. Because of SPACES' limited resources, artists are generally expected to transport, install and de-install their work, and return the gallery to the condition in which it was found.
