SPACES Rooftop Sign-Sculpture

Xan Palay's Rooftop Sculpture

How would you like to see your name up in lights? On January 7th, 2000, SPACES gallery did just that, illuminating the Cleveland skyline with a new rooftop sculpture spelling out "SPACES" in neon and steel. Several hundred visitors joined us for SPACES: The Big Turn On, as this colorful new work, created by artist Xan Palay from Columbus, Ohio, was lit for the first time. Palay was one of over 45 artists invited to submit proposals for our nationwide public art competition. Her project, featuring nine illuminated 12-foot high house-like structures, was selected by a local jury of architects, public artists and lighting specialists. The sign sculpture is funded by The Ohio Arts Council, The Cleveland Foundation, The George Gund Foundation, and individuals.

Gallery hours for SPACES are Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 11-5:30pm. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run alternative space gallery.

Since 1978, SPACES has given over 5500 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West Side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
