Art meets activism and process takes on place as SPACES presents Selections I and Art Action AIDS , two group exhibitions on view November 22 through January 3. Selections I is a group exhibition featuring contemporary drawing, print, fiber and installation art by young artists from across the country. Art Action AIDS documents a controversial art and advertising project aimed at raising AIDS awareness. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, November 22 from 5-9pm. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. On view in SPACES' main gallery space, Selections I is the first in a series of three exhibitions this season focusing on the work of emerging and experimenting artists from across the US. Selections are culled from artists' applications to the gallery by a committee of area curators and working artists. Selections I features process-oriented works in drawing, printmaking, fiber, and installation art by five young artists: Vincent Como (Chicago, IL) builds rich layers of tone using ballpoint pen on paper, Zach Hadlock (Brooklyn, NY) creates multiple installations using sound, intricately patterned sand, and other media, Sarah Lindley (Kalamazoo, MI) builds complex translucent structures from porcelain and light, Micah Kraus (Akron, OH) creates large, multicolored relief prints from worn worktable surfaces, and Marci Rae McDade (Chicago, IL) embroiders dense "paintings" of embroidered thread in vibrant patterns. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
