SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists Rian Brown and Sarah Kepple as a part of its SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of younger artists. Rian Brown (Oberlin, OH) transplants the sights and sounds of Los Angeles to Cleveland with her installation, Traces and Lines / Western Ave. Project, on view from February 22 - Mar 15. Brown focuses on Western Avenue, one of the longest streets in the world, which passes through at least 50 different ethnic groups in LA. The installation includes sound and video sampled from the diverse populations coexisting along the street's 33-mile expanse, combined with a 33 foot long painted scroll which stretches across the gallery, depicting scenes captured through Brown's car window to evoke the noises and images of this continuously changing landscape. Sarah Kepple (Kent, OH) invites visitors to try walking in her shoes, or more accurately, her body, in aPersona, an installation on view from March 9 - Apr 5. Kepple has created a series of garments molded from her own body, each representing a part of her personality, a role she plays in life, or her response to a given situation. Visitors are invited to try on these different identities in front of a mirror, taking dress-up play to a new level. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 6,500 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. |
