SPACELab

SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists Traci Molloy and Michelle Droll as a part of its SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of young working artists.

Traci Molloy (Atlanta, GA) explores issues of adolescent violence in her installation, Dismissed/Missed, on view at SPACES from February 28 - March 21. Molloy covers the walls with "mug-shot" portraits based on photographic images found in the media. The resulting grid mixes images of adolescent killers with those of the young victims, challenging viewers' assumptions and connecting the physical or metaphorical loss of each youth. Mounted near these images are surprisingly similar quotes from two mothers (a murderer's and a victim's) describing their own mourning and grief, and highlighting the loss of identity, life, and innocence that links the adolescents pictured on the wall.

From March 25 - April 11, watch an artwork evolve and change as artist Michelle Droll (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) presents her modular installation, Systemic Reflex. A recent graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Droll reconfigures her large-scale constructions of fabric, paint and plastic throughout the Lab. Her striped curtains, accordion-like cylinders, clear enclosures filled with pom poms, and multicolored containers shift in the space to make new environments every few days.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
