Let go of your earthly troubles at SPACES this Spring, as the gallery presents Elements: Matter, Body, Mind and Spirit, on view from May 9 through June 20, 2003. The exhibition features new work by four artists who visualize the metaphysical, transforming the gallery through sound, video projection, sculptural installation, weaving, and translucent works on paper. Join us for an opening reception on Friday, May 9th, from 5-9pm, featuring refreshments, music, and 10-minute massages (donations appreciated). Then hear the artists discuss their work in person during a free gallery walk-through on Saturday, May 10th, from 5-7pm. The exhibition and opening are free and open to the public. Free parking is available on the Superior Viaduct. The four artists in Elements bring diverse perspectives to their interpretations of the natural and spiritual realms. Peggy Kwong-Gordon (Hudson, OH) translates the passage of time into visual art through her large-scale installation of translucent paintings on paper. Kwong- Gordon creates concentric rings of hanging panels that represent the cycle of five seasons, while smaller works symbolize suspended moments of each day. Jee Sun Park (Cleveland, OH) uses nature as a metaphor for timelessness, creating a sculptural environment of carved wood forms that refer both to urban and natural landscapes, inner and outer worlds. Margaret Cogswell (New York, NY) has spent six weeks researching and documenting the Cuyahoga River through her residency in the SPACES World Artists Program. Her new installation Cuyahoga Fugues combines video projections with industrial materials and layers of sound to explore the interrelationship between Cleveland's industry, waterways and communities. Deborah Carlson (Cleveland, OH) will exhibit her richly colored weavings and works of wax, wood and fiber, which link Hindu spirituality to Western art-making practice. Carlson recently returned from an artist's residency in India sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council. See our special events page for information about special gallery tours, bookbinding workshops, and much more. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. |
