SPACELab

SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists April Keene and Dylan Ethan Collins as a part of its SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of young working artists.

April Keene (Mentor, OH) presents an installation of more than 800 works on Japanese paper in Twenty-three Days and Twenty-three Nights, on view at SPACES from May 9 - 30. Keene, a recent graduate of Kent State University's BFA program, documents a period of twenty-three days and nights through continuous automatic writing. Her personal exploration begins as meditative practice and is transformed into a visually contemplative environment as these written memories and thoughts fill the SPACE Lab gallery. From June 3 - 20,

Dylan Ethan Collins (Kent, OH) presents art that creates even more art, in a kinetic installation entitled Futility Belt. Collins creates elaborate machines of steel, rubber and plywood that create graphite drawings and sculptural components. Both the machines and the final products will be installed in the space, calling into question our ideas about artistic production. Which is the "real" work of art? Who is the artist? You'll have to visit the gallery to decide for yourself.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
