SPACELab

SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists David Bergholz and Andrea Loefke as a part of its SPACELab program. SPACELab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of working artists.

And you thought philanthropy was about giving away money! David Bergholz (Cleveland, OH) examines his inner demons as he whimsically reflects on his 14-year assignment as Executive Director of the George Gund Foundation in an installation entitled The Archaeology of Philanthropy, on view from June 27 - July 18. His collection of 1000+ meeting attendance labels, 2000 daily schedule cards, annual calendars and other detritus of his life in philanthropy are displayed, revealing his valiant personal struggle against both obsession and chaos. Bergholz worked with Nesnadny + Schwartz on the development of this exhibition as he did during his stay at the Foundation in the production of 12 annual reports containing portfolios by noted national and local photographers.

From July 20 - August 1st, Andrea Loefke (Columbus, OH) gives visitors a glimpse into the subconscious through her multi-level installation, Beneath Such Dreamy Weather. Loefke creates a dreamlike world of strange objects made from familiar materials that viewers can access only by climbing small steps to peek through holes in a synthetic sky. The odd creatures that inhabit this new layer of reality suggest narratives to be completed by each new viewer's imagination.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
