SPACES World Artists Program

SPACES World Artists Program

SPACES

Want to meet artists from across the globe, without a passport or a plane ticket? You're in luck! This summer SPACES Gallery launches the SPACES World Artists Program, Ohio's first permanent international residency facility. SPACES provides participating artists with studio and living space, honoraria, publicity, the time to create new art, and a publication about their work. Artists will spend six weeks in Cleveland, culminating in an exhibition of their work at SPACES Gallery. SPACES has planned for more than two years to establish this program, which will enable meaningful interaction between visiting artists and the community to the benefit of both. It is open to regional, national and international artists.

Find out what new ideas an artist from Chile can bring to Cleveland, when you meet the first artist in the SPACES World Artist Program. Carlos Navarrete (Santiago, Chile), who arrived at SPACES Gallery on August 11th for a six-week residency, will make new work, explore the region, interact with the Cleveland community, and work with local Latino groups. Navarrete is the first Chilean artist in residence in Ohio. His work often involves actions or interventions into everyday life, using dice, bicycles and other common materials which he then documents through photography or elaborates upon through sculptural installations. Join us in welcoming Navarrete to Cleveland:

  • Sept 13 Navarrete presents new work created during his SPACES residency in conjunction with Connections: Ohio Artists Abroad, a major exhibition of work by 13 Ohio artists who have participated in international projects supported by the Ohio Arts Council. This exhibition will be on view at SPACES from September 13 - October 25, 2002.
  • Sept 15 A "meet the artist" event on Sunday, September 15th from 1-5pm enabled the public to meet and talk with Navarrete about his work.

  • Sept 19 At 7pm, Navarrete spoke on a panel with artists from the Connections exhibition; Wayne Lawson, Executive Director of the Ohio Arts Council; and Susan Channing, exhibition curator and SPACES Director, about their interactions with other cultures.

  • Jan 25 The second visiting artist in this program (TBA) will arrive from the Czech Republic on January 25th, 2003. Visitors will be able to see the progression of the artist's work during open studio days, and new art created during the residency will be featured in an exhibition opening on February 28th, running through April 11.

  • April 5 The third artist in SPACES World Artists Program will be Margaret Cogswell (Brooklyn, NY), who will work in Cleveland beginning April 5th, 2003. Cogswell creates large-scale installation pieces that link nature with technology, using materials such as light, sound and steam to build a multisensory art environment. Her work will be presented as part of the exhibition Elements: Body, Matter, Mind, and Spirit, opening May 9th.

The SPACES World Artists Program is made possible by funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the Ohio Arts Council through a major grant from the US department of Education. The Cleveland Foundation, and The George Gund Foundation provide additional support.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
