The View From Here:
Recent Pictures From Central Europe and the American Midwest

September 12 - October 24, 2003

With the click of a camera's lens, photographers can bring distant cities to your door, or change the way you see your own hometown. Experience a different kind of culture clash as SPACES presents The View From Here: Recent Pictures from Central Europe and the American Midwest, on view at SPACES from September 12th through October 24th, 2003. This traveling exhibition includes 72 contemporary photographic works by 22 artists who live and work in Central Europe and the American Midwest.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, Sept 12th, from 5-9pm, and the closing reception on Friday, Oct 24th, from 5-9pm. As always, the receptions and exhibition are free and open to the public. Free parking is available on the Superior Viaduct, and SPACES' gallery hours have been expanded to stay open late Fridays and Saturdays until 9pm. SPACES is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11-5:30, Friday and Saturday from 11-9:00, and Sunday from 1- 5:00.

Curated by Catherine Evans (Curator of Photography at the Columbus Museum of Art), The View From Here explores the significance and unique role that place plays in shaping cultural identity. Though Central Europe and the American Midwest may seem impossibly different, the artwork in this exhibition draws parallels between the distinct cultures and landscapes in the cities, towns and villages of these two regions. The 22 artists selected for this exhibition truly present a unique perspective of the places in which they live - each far removed from the traditional large cultural centers of their respective continents. The photography in this exhibition is diverse in content and in form, ranging from the pop-cultural commentary of Eric Rippert (Cleveland, OH) and an insider's view of the inner city courtesy of Wing Young Huie (Minneapolis, MN), to suburban landscapes by Andrew Borowiec (Akron, OH), architectural abstraction by Eva Koves (Budapest, Hungary), and magical realism by Robo Kocan (Poprad, Slovakia). Kocan will spend six weeks as the latest Resident Artist in SPACES World Artists Program, creating a new body of work and interacting with the community. SPACES will present Robo Kocan: New Pictures in conjunction with The View From Here.
