SPACELab

SPACES presents installations by 2005 Cleveland Institute of Art graduates Jed Holtz & Thu Tran, and 2004 graduate Mary Savage, as part of its SPACELab program. The shows will run in conjunction with Enamel: Beyond the Object, opening June 24 with a reception from 6-10pm. SPACELab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of working artists.

(Cleveland, OH) NAIL PROJECT

Nail Project is a collaboration resulting from a shared fascination with nail art and its significance within Cleveland’s community. Interested in exposing a different aspect of nail art, Holtz and Tran challenge the cultural notion of nail art being cheap, disposable and gaudy by presenting the nail designs at a new scale using enamel and copper. The collaborative team has also used this project as an opportunity to engage with the community, interviewing nail clients and artists, and ultimately commissioning 100 sets of ten nails from Cleveland area salons.

Mary Savage
(Waterford, MI) FLORA & FAUNA

Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Mary Savage will break from her own tradition of abstraction, returning to representational imagery typically seen in enameled cloisonné vessels and limoges plates. Savage will create recognizable imagery such as people, animals, plants, and man-made objects to draw connections and point out differences between various natural realms. Savage feels that the visual interest of the enamel surface will serve as a compelling entry point for viewers.
