In 2002, SPACES significantly expanded its programming with the addition of the SPACES World Artists Program (SWAP), an eight-week residency program designed to give visiting artists the time and opportunity to create new work and interact with the Northeast Ohio community. The SPACES World Artists Program accepts regional, national and international visual artists who work in any media. Artists may be at different stages in their careers, but must be self-sufficient and mature enough to manage the experience of living in a new environment, working and meeting with people, with the ultimate goal of creating new work for exhibition. The artist retains property of all work created. National artists may divide their residencies into shorter stays totaling six weeks. SWAP does not accept unsolicited materials. Artists are selected from a nomination process with our international partners. For major support of the SPACES World Artists Program, we are indebted to the Ohio Arts Council, which funds international residencies through a grant from the US Department of Education; to the The Nimoy Foundation; to the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, for support of US artists; and to The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, through which we were able to set aside the funds necessary to initiate this program. |
