You are invited to a 20th Anniversary Celebration that will open the exhibition on Saturday, September 12, from 1-6 pm at SPACES. It will be a bash in the way that only SPACES can party. The celebration will pour out onto Superior Viaduct for an all day event, including food, performance art, music, and other surprises. Throughout the day a hot-air balloon, created by Rob Mihaly (Cleveland) will fly over the Superior Viaduct (weather permitting,) and a Cake Walk featuring artist-made cakes and cookies will run throughout the dya. During the opening celebration, painter Patrick Kelly (Cleveland) will reprise his performance piece, Square Off, last seen at SPACES in 1979. Frank Green (Cleveland) will continue his own AIDS research project as part of his ongoing interactive performance piece, Anonymous Test Site. Artists Jeff Chiplis (Cleveland) and Bryn Zellers (Youngstown) will play musical instruments of their own invention, and Anna Arnold (Cleveland) will interact with other celebrants.

William Busta, former owner of the William Busta Gallery, has curated the exhibition with the history of SPACES-- and its future impact in the next century--in mind. The exhibition looks both to the past and the future of alternative art in Cleveland presenting the new and existing work of over 50 artists (out of 4,000) who have shown at SPACES over the past 20 years.

Artists include: Mary Jo Bole, Melissa J. Craig, Patrick Dougherty, Mark Howard, Pamela Keech, Peggy Kwong Gordon, Michael Loderstedt, Kevin Everson, Craig Lucas, John L. Moore, Catherine Redmond, Lilian Tyrrell, Laila Voss, and Mel Ziegler. Drawing from the past, memebers from Cleveland's now dispersed Eat at Art's gang will collaborate on a unique table setting for the first time since 1982, and some of the artists from the 1985 Domo Project will give SPACES a homey feel. The exhibition fruns from September 12 through October 23, 1998.

This site is produced and hosted by artist Caroline Anderson.
